  21st February , 2017 ,       Hits: 322

February 10, 2017, Kampala Uganda. UNBS has an obligation to protect public health and safety to ensure that consumers get quality products that match the value for their money. This is achieved through formulation and implementation of Standards for both locally manufactured and imported products for the Ugandan market.

In the wake of the ever increasing public outcry regarding the quality of tyres on Ugandan market, UNBS has formulated standards for pneumatic tyres and are readily available for implementation by various stakeholders.

Stakeholders were invited to a meeting on Friday 10th February 2017 at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) to deliberate on modalities for implementation of the tyre standards.

The available standards for pneumatic tyres include; Pneumatic tyres for trucks & buses, Passenger cars, light trucks and agricultural implements.

Concerns regarding poor packaging, transportation and storage of the pneumatic tyres during importation and distribution were reported as these poor practices lead to a degeneration in quality of tyres posing a risk to the safety the public

These concerns were therefore addressed in the standards that have been formulated and their implementation will be effected immediately.

‘’UNBS has a mandate to regulate the quality of tyres in order to ensure that the safety of Ugandans while travelling on the roads is not compromised. We shall therefore conduct inspections to ensure that there is compliance with the requirements.’’ Executive Director UNBS, Dr. Ben Manyindo.
