Kampala, May 14th, 2018- Uganda National Bureau of Standards will join the rest of the world in commemorating World Metrology Day on May 20th 2018. The theme for this year is Constant Evolution of the International System of Units (SI) [the SI provides definitions of units of measurement that are widely accepted in science and technology and which set measurement standards agreed to through the Metre Convention, a diplomatic treaty between signatory nations]. This theme was chosen because in November 2018, the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) is expected to agree on one of the largest changes to the International System of Units [which is founded on seven base units; the metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole and candela corresponding to the seven base quantities of length, mass, time, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, amount of substance and luminous intensity].
The proposed changes are based on the results of research into new measurement methods that have used important phenomena as the basis for standards that are based on fundamental Constants. The kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole are expected to be redefined. The entire SI will finally be based on a set of definitions each linked to the laws of physics and have the advantage of being able to embrace further improvements in measurement science and technology to meet the needs of future users for many years to come.
As the custodian of standards in Uganda, among which are the measurement standards for weights and measures, Uganda National Bureau of Standards will host a workshop for students in science disciplines from a number of secondary schools and universities along with their teachers and lecturers respectively, as well as laboratory technicians. This workshop is intended to prepare the science community on the advancements in measuring techniques happening in scientific work and innovation to ensure the reliability of measurements, align and harmonize measurement requirements worldwide.
World Metrology Day is an annual event during which the measurement, science and technology Communities in all countries celebrate the impact of measurement on our daily lives. May 20th marks the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875. This treaty provides the basis for a coherent measurement system worldwide that underpins scientific, innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, as well as the improvement of the quality of life and the protection of the global environment.
Each year World Metrology Day is organized and celebrated jointly by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) with the participation of the national organizations responsible for metrology.
