UNBS, UMA join hands to rid steel sector of substandard products

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) together with the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) have developed a three-tier process that will aid the fight against substandard products in the steel sector.

The joint program follows an increase in the substandard steel products flooding the market, most especially ribbed steel bars whose weights, length and thickness do not conform to the requirements of the relevant quality standards.

During the meeting held between the Association and the Standards regulator in Kampala recently, the team agreed that;

UNBS engages players in the steel sector on the standards requirements for the steel sector

UMA holds a Peer engagement among all its members in  the steel sector

Both UNBS and UMA hold joint sensitisation and enforcement activities to recreate momentum for compliance to standards and reduce on substandard products in the sector.

The UNBS Acting Executive Director, Mr. David Livingstone Ebiru called for self-regulation in the sector and capacity building of consumers to ensure that they play a part in quality enforcement.

“We call upon the public to be mindful and look out for only quality products bearing a UNBS Quality Mark.we shall  I continue communicating to consumers and empower them to   differentiate between a substandard and a quality product.” Said Mr. Ebiru.

The Executive Director of Uganda Manufacturers Association, Mr. Daniel Birungi thanked UNBS for accepting the partnership and assured that UMA too is ready to work with UNBS to ensure a levelled playing ground in the steel sector.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) is a statutory body responsible for developing, promoting and enforcing standards in protection of Health and Safety of the public and the Environment well as facilitating Fair trade and Competition.
